Save The Artist

by Mike Evin

I wrote this song in December 2019, and it was inspired by getting an email from the Australian singer-songwriter Ben Lee lamenting the death of musician David Berman of the Silver Jews. He wrote: "It's funny that we give ourselves permission to be a fan and to say kind, supportive things to artists once they pass on, but often don't take the opportunity while they are still here to hear it."

I’m also annoyed when people glorify the image of the "tortured artist". This is detrimental and dangerous, in my opinion. Everyone deserves to be happy and stable, and in the long run that will lead to more art.

I recorded the song with my friend Murray Foster (Moxy Früvous, Great Big Sea) at his home studio. We played everything ourselves and Murray mixed it.

Here hang the photos
of our hero's younger days
a dangling cigarette
and such a brooding gaze
now that he's gone
we can let on
how much we loved him
all along

Save the artist
before the art
save each dreamer
who plays a part
save the artist before the art

There go the posters
and they're guaranteed to sell
and all the critics praise
but did they ever wish him well
a tortured soul
just fits the role
it's good for business
so rock & roll

And all the mothers say
"here's one more story
one more reason to stay away"
and all the magazines
they call it genius
call it just the price you pay
