PHOTO - Franklyn and me in Havana

The Malecon is a boardwalk type street in Havana where the residents come to live, love and dream. I spent the first week of my 2012 Cuba trip in Havana learning Spanish. Every evening, I heard someone practicing saxophone in the park near where I was staying. One day I walked over with a few packages of sax reeds from Canada (they're very scarce in Cuba) and offered them to the saxophonist. His name was Franklyn and we became fast friends. We'd spend hours talking about music over the next few days.

One evening, we were sitting in the park when this fellow Lazaro, carrying a nylon string guitar, stopped to chat. We walked with him through the parks and onto the Malecon. It seemed like the whole world was on the Malecon that night - families, lovers, hustlers, musicians and food vendors.

Lazaro and I took turns playing songs on his guitar, and I played my song "Do You Feel The World?". When I came to the lyric "feel the breeze come in from across the ocean", Franklyn was convinced I had made up that verse on the spot! It's amazing how songs can sometimes ring true after the fact.

I spent many a Havana night on the Malecon - lonely, inspired, comforted, cautious and relaxed.

lyrics

I’ve been to a place they call the Malecon
stretching for miles along the sea
not too long ago I found the Malecon
where all the resting lovers seemed so free

CHORUS:
Woah-oh - I wished that we could be
Woah-oh - Malecon lovers, you and me

It was hard to find a place sometimes on the Malecon
but next to a family I would sit
just pretending I was the oldest son
who came back to town for a visit

CHORUS

BRIDGE:
And on the other side of the family
he’s got the back of his head on her thighs
and his lips around her eyes

They’re selling guitar strings on the Malecon
for cheaper than you find them in the shops
but there always is a trovadore on the Malecon
even if fishing wire’s all he’s got

CHORUS

Woah-oh - caught between the sea
Woah-oh - and Malecon lovers getting free
