This is one of the traditional Santeria Afro-Cuban rhythms (originally from the Nigeria region of Africa) I learned on the bata drum. There are 3 bata drums (iya, itotole, onkokolo), and they're usually played simultaneously - making a polyrhythmic texture.

Here my teacher, Gilberto "Indio" Morales, introduces a run-through during a lesson for my iPhone recorded. Joining us is one of his students, Lorena.
